Barrels of Fun

Nita is sidelined with torn ligaments around her knee from an incident involving a ladder, poison sumac, and a swimming pool. She can't ride, but she had planned to till the arena. She couldn't find the keys to the tractor, so the footing was a bit rough.

The ears foretell his attitude.
It was not unexpected, since I haven't been on him in 2 months.

He was such an itch, and made me work for every step of this ride.

We walked.

To his credit, he caught on quickly to make tight turns
and bend around the barrels, which is not evident
in any of these photos.

Nita's husband and Heather's dad, Jim, on his trusty steed, Doodles.

Me, me! You should have picked me!
I'd be a good boy and do it much better.
Next time, my sweet boy.

Me and my bad boy.
The hat is actually a helmet, and yes, I'll admit
right here in front of God and everybody
that I'm wearing a Michael Waltrip NASCAR shirt.

Looks like you had a grand time! I love the helmet, need to get one like it.
Nice you can ride your guy bareback. I like to ride bareback, but Jack is too darn goosey for me to be able to get a good grip on his keg of a barrel.

Wow - look at you, bareback! I'm impressed lady :)
I want to work up the nerve to try it but I'll admit I'm a bit scared. Although I'm sure "puffy" Applejack will be easier to sit than my narrow as a board Cessa. lol

Just a little tip - when you practice barrels the slower you go the more room you leave. In other words, don't get too close and tight. Because when you add speed it will all get closer and tighter.

LOL -- cdncowgirl, who said anything about adding speed??? I still can't sit a trot, remember? BUT -- good tip and I will take it to heart in case the miraculous happens.

Ok it was 2 months since you rode your guy and you are riding bareback? And you didn't fall off while turning around barrels (who cares if they were at a walk, lol)? I'd say that's pretty gutsy for sure. I am still talking myself up to someday ride my girl bareback too. But it's going to be when it's 100 degrees out and after an hour ride so she's too tired to do anything goofy.

lol. I like Michael Waltrips commercials....

Seriously, what is the big deal about riding bareback? I did put a bridle on him because it had been so long since I rode. Sometimes I just use reins clipped to a halter. And what a workout! My core and inner thigh muscles are still sore.

Looking good Leah!! I used to ride bareback all the time - was too lazy to bother with a saddle, and you're right - it's great exercise! I sometimes think riding bareback might be safer...if you're going to fall, there's nothing to get hung up on, smooth sailing!! I've never ridden the Laddmonster bareback though, he is large barreled and very round and there's no hair to hang onto at all. He's so sensitive, that the moment your leg touches his sides, he's all go! Might stick to a saddle with the big guy.
I'm glad you're having fun with your boys.

c-ingspots, Sometimes it really is just laziness, but I actually DO feel safer riding bareback for exactly that reason. Only once have I felt the need to slide off him while he was in motion, and had no qualms at all about doing it. Slide, push away. All that said, I think I'd like some sort of pad for both our sakes. You'd think my butt would be padded enough, but ouch, ouch, ouch. And you'd think it wouldn't be a big deal for my Tank, but his back is so flat it's like flopping up and down on a picnic table!

Great pictures! I'm impressed that you are riding bareback. It's so good for balance, I need to do it more often! I love the "Appy look", LOL! It was fun to see you in that western hat helmet. I always wondered what those looked like on and considered getting one! I was worried it'd be too warm on a hot day. What do you think??

Leah Fry said...

PG, it's no hotter than any other helmet. What I want to know is if I can get the hat steamed to shape the brim differently. Need to go to the website and find out.

Aw, that is so cool! I love to ride bareback but on skinny barbs it is next to impossible!

I'm intrigued about the helmet. What's the link?

It's a Troxel helmet.
