Hot & More Hot

Actual temps have been 105°-107°. I don't even want to know the heat index. It's hard to muster much motivation.

I got back in touch with the guy that sold me Poco to see if he still had the Aussie saddle he had back when. He doesn't have horses anymore and I figured that even if it wouldn't work for me, I could clean it up and sell it or trade it. He showed up not only with the Aussie saddle, but with the cutest little Mexican-made kid's saddle, which he gave me. No pix until I work on them, but that ain't gonna happen until the weather breaks. Sweat will be involved even then.

I haven't mentioned it here before, but the reason I'm excited about the kid's saddle is that our son and daughter-in-law are expecting our first grandchild, a boy, in October. Let the spoiling begin. My revenge will be complete. They have been warned.

I rode Jaz Sunday in the Aussie saddle. It's okay, but I don't feel the need to keep it. It's an inexpensive saddle, but I think I can make a couple bucks selling it. If one needed an additional saddle, or one to break youngsters, this would work. I can tell by the way it fits Jaz, that it won't fit Poco; he's very particular about his shoulders.

Whether Jaz was expressing his opinion of the saddle, the heat, or was just being a stinker, the ride was a struggle. Heather rode Dream, her leopard Appaloosa filly. Both were perfectly willing to walk, but neither wanted to move out. And who could blame them? We made the mistake of sitting in the shade after we hosed them off, and there was no getting back out there. I groomed Poco, who was also kind of cranky, and we let him, Jaz, and Daltrey graze in the area outside the pens.

I keep reminding myself that summer is the price we pay for being able to ride in jeans and a T-shirt most of the winter. It's hard to keep that in mind as your brain bakes.

I hear that - its been a brutal August, but considering we had August weather for three months last year, I'm just mumbling my complaints.

Glad you are still getting out to ride, though! That's cowgirlin' up!

I hear you Leah-- I have come to *hate* the month of August n the South. Seriously... H-A-T-E it.

But you have an excellent point about riding in extreme comfort all winter! ;)

I love Heather's blog BTW... thank you SO much for pointing me over there. On rough days, I just take a moment, sit down, and go there just to look at all those pretty spotted rumps, and all the happy peoples.... Ahhh Heaven...!

Take care of yourself and those handsome boys out there. Don't melt or bake your brain too much!!

We have cooled way down , and had a lot more rain , the best time to ride these days seems to be when I am at work. Heres hoping for an Indian Summer here

Hmmmm, I'm not sure "baked brains" are worth "winter comfort" (we Swamplanders just pile on the winter gortex and go!) but I'll take your word for it.

Congrats on the new family member. Just think of all the cute little "cowboy/cowgirl duds" you can get for the baby!

Wow, that's some heat! I envy you your winters - ours can be brutal - but I couldn't take heat like that.

I can't wait to see the little Mexican saddle. I bet your new grandbaby cowpoke/cowgirl will look adorable sitting in it, too.

Sorry about the heat. We've been having gloriously beautiful weather this week...temps in the mid 80's with cool breezes. And at night the temps are dropping into low 50's.
Yesterday our temps were in the 60's all day and last night it actually got down to 47 degrees! Brrr!
But it's awesome sleeping weather.

Of course, this all means that Autumn is already here. Snow will be arriving in October...just one more month away.

Sounds extremely hot! I am glad we don't get that hot here!
Congrats on the soon to be grandchild! That is neat that you already have a saddle for the little cowboy/cowgirl!

Been catching up here and just wanted to say hi. Sounds like you've been riding a fair amount though, and that's an accomplishment. It's been hot the last few days here too, but today is back into the mid 70's, which is simply divine in my opinion. Wish I could spend more time at home instead of always at this clinic. Life is perfect for no one, I guess. LOVE your beautiful sunrise pics...gorgeous!!! That is a reason to awaken early!! Take care and kiss those ponies for me...
