O What Progress!

Heather and I made the 2.5 hour trip to Weatherford, Texas to visit O at his trainer's, Wendy White Performance Horses. It was great to see the big lug.

Turn the sound down on the videos. It was quite windy and that's all you can hear. It's unfortunate, because Wendy talked to us the whole time she longed and rode, explaining everything he did and she did.

Ready to be hosed down after his workout.
Doesn't he look great?!
He is lean and muscled.
That's his soon-to-be new owner, Heather Crispin
holding him, and Wendy with the hose.

How could you not love that face?

I was chastised for feeding O cookies. Wendy is of the opinion that you should never feed a horse from your hands. The Heathers and I don't agree. She is a woman after my own heart, however, in one respect: after working O and hosing him down, she tied him to the fence in the shade so he could dry off, and as a lesson in patience. There was some initial pawing and fidgeting (which got him nowhere), then he settled down. He was still standing there quietly when we left.

Heather H. and I felt like proud mama and auntie for the foundation work we laid on him over the last 2 years. I think he'll be at Wendy's for at least another month. Although he's made tremendous headway, there's still lots of room for improvement. Heather C. said she wants to enter him in a halter class in October. When you're talking 1800 lbs. of testosterone, solid training is even more of a no-brainer.

Big handsome fellow! He is workig well . Now I am confuseed is he a Sugarbush draft or A Stonewall Sport horse, not being silly , just learning about these guys

O is the last known standing Sugarbush Draft stallion. The Stonewalls are crosses. Baby Daltrey is a Stonewall; his dam is an Appaloosa. To get more Sugarbushes from Stonewalls, you cross them back up to high percentage draft mares or stallions.

Wow. He's such an interesting looking horse. I don't know what to think.
I can see that below his belly he looks like a draft horse with the big, wide knees, strong legs, and the humongous flat feet, but up on top, mostly on his barrel and rump, he looks more like an appaloosa. But then his head is a mix-up of the two: appy and draft. He's like a horse of a different color. lol!

He is handsome, though. How is he when mares are around. Does he pay attention and keep his mind on working?

Did you and Heather get the chance to ride him, too?

Sounds like you had a fun horsie day.

No, we didn't have a chance to ride him. We dressed for it, but I had decided not to even if the opportunity presented itself. I'm still a novice and would not want to muddle his head at this stage in his training. Besides that, he's still greener than green and careens around the round pen like a drunken sailor. You didn't see all the times he bounced off the sides of that round pen. Wendy said she's solid bruises from her calves to mid-thigh. She had to continually run her spurs up his sides to get him off the rails.

WOW he IS gorgeous!!! What a great horse!! I'm so glad you got to go see him!! He appears to be doing great!! It's always so touch and go with greenies! But it sounds like the trainer is doing a great job with him!

I have to say I agree on the cookies...I used to give them to my horses but I did figure out that the ones that received them tended to be more pushy. BUT to each his own and if your horses do good with them then so be it!!

Work agrees with O. He looks good.

What type of show are they planning on showing him in Halter in?

Leah Fry said...

BECG, not sure. But they do a lot of draft playdays, so prolly a specialty draft show.

Gorgeous! Just gorgeous! It sounds like he's doing fantastic.

I'm in a middle place with cookies right now. Cookies are only for clicker training (with one always in the trailer). So there has to be a purpose.
