Thank You, Alex

Thanks to Hurricane Alex, we've had unheard-of rain most of this week. The silver lining to the clouds is that our parched land has greedily absorbed as much of it as it could. I tweaked my back (doing nothing) and am tethered to my TENS unit this weekend, but it would be too soggy to ride in any case.

My only complaint is that the unseasonable rain has done weird things to my horses' feet, which would ordinarily be dry and cracking about now. Instead, they are white, soft, and crumbly. They shed their entire frogs at once — I pulled them off with no effort at all — and they were completely white. I put ThrushX all over the soles of their feet, but it's too wet to do anything about it right now. My back won't allow me to bend over to do anything anyway. All I can do is hope.

So the Boyz's job this weekend is to mow the dog yard, which makes them very happy.

Shoveling it in as fast as they can.

Who cares about five round bales? Gimme the green!

Taking a break to scratch an itch.

Hope y'all get to enjoy your ponies this weekend.

Hope the back feels better - I know how that can be!

The rain's made everything look pretty good down your way - ponies should be enjoying that!

Glad you got some rain to green things up. WI had a lot in June, the heat that followed dried the excess up fast. Now if only it would get rid of the mosquitoe swarms...

Sorry to hear about your back. Hope your on the mend.

Doc sheds his frog like that, too. I've noticed when we had some sloppy snow that all 4 peeled back to the heel. They did it again recently when we had some rain. My farrier said, "Oh yeah, they do that twice a year." But I'm thinking it is related, as you commented, to moisture.

Hope your back feels better.

I've had my horses for 4 years now and have never seen their frogs do that. I've picked off little pieces before, but never just peeled the whole thing off like that on all four feet of both horses. Mrs. Mom emailed me and told me not to worry, so now I KNOW they're okay :-)

Hooray for Mrs. Mom!
I'm glad she says this is an OK thing! It has been a concern for me in the past, but since Doc seems to be fine, I now just ignore it!

Yes, Alex has been quite generous with the waterworks. El nino just keeps stirring up rain.

Sorry to hear about your back! What's a TENS?

Thrush is no fun. Such a stink!

A TENS unit is one of those devices that delivers a pulsing current into the muscles to tire it out and relieve pain. I originally hurt my back about 5 years ago (doing I know not what), and I had one to use for PT. When I went to give it back, they said my insurance had paid for it and I got to keep it. I can't even tell you how many times that thing has helped both Mr. Fry and I.

Apparently anyone can buy them. Here is the one I have: http://www.carerehab.com/IFC_plus.html

I've never noticed my horses shedding their frogs. It's always so dry here if that makes a difference. Hope your back heals quickly. Good thing you've still got that TENS machine.

Poco's expression cracks me up! lol!

I suppose you're getting a taste of what it must be like to live in the PNW. I wouldn't mind at least SOME rain here. The rain we'vebeen getting lasts a 1/2 hour or less and the ground is dry about the same time that the last raindrop falls. We're parched!

Your dog yard looks so lush and green. Yummy for the horses. Is it ok for Jazu to eat the grass now? Or was it the hay that was causing him problems?

Lisa, Jaz's entire problem was from the strongyles. He's fine now that he's been treated and we introduced him back to free-choice hay and grazing gradually with the help of a grazing muzzle. He's fat and sassy.

Thanks for sharing the link, but unfortunately it seems to be offline... Does anybody have a mirror or another source? Please reply to my post if you do!

I would appreciate if a staff member here at barndoortagz.blogspot.com could post it.

Thanks,
