Helpful Tip

To keep any grain-based food,
human or equine,
from spawning those little bitty bugs,
put bay leaves in the container.

For horse treats and stuff like oatmeal,
or a canister of flour,
tape them to inside of the lid.
For grain, bran, sunflower seeds, etc.,
throw them in loose or
tape them to the inside of the bag.
I am always careful not to
scoop any out into the
horses' bowls accidentally,
since I couldn't find
out if it is safe for horses to
eat laurel leaves.

I don't know about horses but when we had goats laurel would kill them if they ate it. I too use bay leaves in things in the house. I hate getting those bug-a-boos in my flour!!!!

No way! I'm running out to the feed room right this minute with my jar of bay leaves. I had a massive outbreak of those ittybitty bugs last August and it was such a p.i.t.a. Let's hear it for an ounce of prevention! Thanks!

I wish bay trees would grow here--I gotta go get bay leaves at the grocery store!

Great advice, though. Thanks!

Interesting tip! I am always terrified to open my bag of flour and find bugs. The weirdest thing happened once. At a school I taught at, years ago, I brought a tub of those plastic Easter eggs down from a top shelf. They were closed up but some of them still have chocolates in them from the year before. Lo and behold I opened one up and what do I find?? You guessed it, some kind of maggots! I could not believe it. In a sealed Easter egg, on tiny pieces of wrapped Recess PB cups? I don't even want to know.....
