With a Little Bit of Luck

You can make just one mistake
It can take you to your grave
Honey, one bad move can
Turn your world upside down
It’s such a shame
Cause you’ve been so good up to now

"You’ve Been So Good Up To Now"
Lyle Lovett
From the 1992 album "Joshua Judges Ruth"

'Little Bit' is the name
the animal shelter gave Martha.

She has been my little —
and I mean LITTLE —
snuggle baby shadow since
I picked her up on Saturday.

Altogether now,
"How small is she?"

She's so small,
she makes Cindi
look like a big dog.

Both are JRT/Chihuahua.
Cindi is the size of a JRT but
looks like a fat Chihuahua.

Martha is the size of a Chihuahua,
stubby legged and barrel chested like a JRT.
She has that unmistakable JRT swagger.
Only thing big about her is ATTITUDE.

She weighs 8 lbs.
Look at those mousy feet.
They're the size of my thumbs!

Know what we call dogs
like that out here?
Coyote bait.
An average-sized hawk could take her.

She's feisty, with enough street smarts to understand the limitations of her size. She dodges things bigger than she is and stays out from underfoot. Well, most of the time.

If she wants something, she'll take on all comers to get it. Imagine this slip of a thing getting in the face of a 65-lb. Doberman. She even gave the Boyz some sass.

She's already slipped out of the dog yard twice. Mike says he'll try to tighten it up, but she may always be able to find a way out. We will never be able to let her run the full property. This dog's survival depends on the choices she makes, and they better be smart ones, namely:
  • STAY here and don't wander
  • Relax and get along with everyone
  • Be Mom's dog
That last one's not a deal breaker; they like whom they like. Cindi and Chula are Dad's dogs. I'll do in a pinch — a distant second — when he's not around, but they will mow me down to get to Mike. Everybody loves Dad.

I'd love it if Martha would decide to be my dog.

Awwww!!! What a sweet little doggie! Hope she stays in her yard and doesn't get into trouble! We had a little 6 pound Chihuahua when we moved here to the farm and she thought she was a cow dog! She wasn't afraid of nothin', had to watch her all the time if she was outside.
Martha is a cutie!!! :-)

I'm with you on that one. All the dogs take to my husband right away, and I'm just some bystander who they have to share the house with. They don't realize that I picked them out. The only time they mind me is when my husband isn't home. Otherwise, they will only listen to him and they turn a deaf ear on me. I'm happy you got a new family member.

Way cute little poochie!! May Miss Martha pick you for her very own person!! I don't know what I would do without my dog. She's my constant companion and a constant source of joy. Woman's best friend!

She looks like a real sweetheart :)

Our families dogs were always "Dad's dogs" except for one, Cheena. She was mine and she was supposed to be mine, glad that worked out lol

TOO cute!! It would be fun to have a little lap dog sometime!! I just saw the movie The Proposal (Sandra Bullock) and there is a scene where they tell her character NOT to let the puppy out of the house because the eagle's will get it...well she is clueless and let's it out and an eagle does pick it up (it's a comic scene, not traumatic, and the puppy is dropped and was fine! :)

She is so cute!
My dog growing up, ended up being my mom's dog. My Aussie's love me and my OH, but Sadie, who is supposed to be my princess, does like to follow him around a little bit more, but she likes to sit at my feet! They are so funny that way!

My animals love men in general. Maybe they just need a change now and then. The exception is my little dog Maynard, who is a complete mama's boy. Then he gets jealous if someone comes near me. I can't win!

Adopting animals is the best feeling in the world!

My dogs would wander if they had the chance. My little guy is crate trained, and stays in a kennel when I am not home. I wish I had done that with my bigger dog, but I couldn't afford the crate for her size...

Thanks all. She is crated much of the time, especially all night and when Mike is here sleeping during the day. Probably will continue to do that since we can't leave her in the dog yard unattended and it's questionable exactly how ingrained being housebroken is. I don't trust her to be anywhere by herself yet.

She's not a puppy, but we still have to treat her like one for now.

She's a little tyrant. Still picking on everybody else, all of whom are too polite to kick her butt ... yet.

I love a dog with 'tude. She's got that cowgirl look, so I'm guessin' she'll find a kindred spirit in you and be a mom's dog. Can't wait to read more stories about her.
